¡Un Banquete Mexicano Delicioso!

The South

January 10, 2008

Starting 2008 in Englewood, we met at The South, another favorite DinnerGirls restaurant. Unfortunately, the place has had an interior facelift so gone is the dark, late 60's era ambiance... the red lighting, the dated decor... all of it is gone and now has fresh paint, a brighter interior and new lights -- which are covered in photos of the owner from what looks like must have been his college days. Kooky!

The table at which we were seated was kooky too. It was long and we all faced one way. In fact we all faced another couple at a long table who were facing us. We shifted things around and managed to isolate ourselves so were weren't staring at our poor neighbors.

Many things are different these days at The South, the food however, hasn't changed a bit! After ordering a FISHBOWL of margaritas, and a round of chips, salsa & mediocre guac (strangely creamy), we ordered plates of quesaritos, enchiladas, and other mexican delights - individual reviews to follow - see comments.

All in all, another great dinner at The South. Next month - Carol returns from Ohio to take us into the Chinese New Year...

Ah, The South. I love this place! I will find a way to adjust to the new decor but will always miss the old. As long as the margaritas and quesarito remains the same, we're good. Perhaps it was from filling up on chips & salsa and then our dinners, but the margarita - despite the fishbowl size - may have been lacking in tequila? Maybe it was just me but it usually doesn't take much tequila to bring the rosy to my cheeks. At any rate, I ventured beyond my usual order of the Veggie Quesarito and gave the Spinach Enchiladas a whirl. They were pretty good, altho my favorite spinach enchiladas have a little more sauce inside - not quite as dry. Still, The South is a great choice for anyone in the Englewood area. I would always recommend. Thanks Hondo!

I loved the fishbowl! Don't we have a picture of someone drinking from it?

I had a tostada and chili relleno (I think). They were yummy, though the cheese was interesting inside the relleno. What I really remember what dropping my leftovers in the middle of the street when I got home! Bummer!

I wish I could have seen it preremodel. It was a great time!

Hmmm...my memory of the fishbowl margarita was quite different!! Albeit a sticky mess, it seemed true to the South's reputation as strong, strong, stong!!! I felt quite the buzz for my $4.00 contribution toward the bowl-o-margs!! I ordered the chili relleno and chicken enchilada. Yikes, the relleno looked and tasted like a frozen, mass-produced version you buy at the grocery store. The menu did say it was filled w/ easy-melt cheese, so I should have been forwarned! The chili itself was very tough and stringy. The only saving grace was the delicious green chili w/ lots of pork! The chicken enchilada was supreme, also covered in the delish chili!!! It was huge with lots of tender chicken. I took half of it home and it was even better the next day for breakfast!

Yum, Yum, Yum!!! My Steak Quesarito was to die for! The large pieces of tender steak melted in my mouth and were flavored as if they were cooked on a bar-b-que grill. The green chili with plump chunks of pork added the perfect finishing touch. I thought the fishbowl of margaritas was a bit light on the tequila too, but for $4.00.......guess we should have ordered two! Miss the dark red ambiance, but don't mind the new. I think everybody should experience The South at least once, and I bet you will go back for seconds!

After many chips and salsa and lots of the margarita since I wasn't driving, I barely had much room for my dinner. If I remember correctly, my dinner was . . .huevos rancheros smothered with green chili. Gotta love breakfast items for dinner! Also, we just cannot find a Mexican restaurant in Ohio that serves real green chili-just salsa verde. THe green chili was the right mix of spice and sauce. The huevos scrambled and very tasty. A huge portion size, too. I can't wait to go back on another visit and order the breakfast burrito!

The South!!!
I love The South...just can't say that I love the inside The South.
But I love the patio at The South (okay...or sitting at the end of the bar with Jenny but I have a feeling those days are gone gone gone!)

Since Jen and I did not spilt the Quesarito, I am guessing that I probably had a Chimichanga or a Smothered Burrito with Shredded Beef and a side of beans instead of rice.
It was really good whatever it was but I don't think I have ever had anything that I really didn't like at The South.

As for the Fishbowl O'Rita's...I gotta say something here.
The South doesn't really do it for me as far as their Margaritas...I like them on a hot day on the patio, but other than that...I don't think they have a lot of tequila in them and their mix is either too sweet or too sour...after two or four, they leaving me dying for a beer!
But like I said, on a hot day, on the patio...I am all about another Fishbowl! (Diclaimer: Minimum 5 Girls Required!)
