“You can’t screw up wine and company!” with that pearl of wisdom, Rhonda said it all!
I really wanted to love 730 South. I pass it every Monday thru Thursday on my way to work and have been dying to try it. So, with a little help from the bunch, I picked it.
Let’s start with the positives. The décor is fabulous…the ambiance is fantastic…the menu is abundant (there really is something for everyone) and the service is exquisite.
Our waitress, Melissa, figured out early that we are some exuberant and boisterous girls and reacted accordingly…she was fun and accommodating in every way…we liked her immediately and immensely!!
As for the fare…I can’t say that I was at all impressed. My dinner, Rosemary Pork Chop was described on the menu as being served with dates and kalamata olives…it is possible they were mashed up and mixed into the sauce but I saw nor tasted any evidence of them at all. The chop was well cooked but for a restaurant I was looking for better than I could do at home. The pork was also specifically listed as a 10 ounce chop on the menu but I was unimpressed with the cut, it seemed to be mostly fat…let’s just say I didn’t eat it all and didn’t bother taking home my leftovers, which is very rare for me.
As usual, I had a taste of everyone’s dinner and the Tilapia special was very good but the initial Mahi Mahi that was delivered to the table was horribly overcooked and the portion was rather tiny compared to the price, thankfully it was not a problem at all to send it back. (which Melissa handled perfectly).
Overall, I have a very mixed feeling about 730 South. I wanted to love love love it, but that just was not the case. They have great service, a fantastic menu and a beautiful atmosphere but their pricing just seems as if they are trying too hard to be “Cherry Creek” bistro instead of just a wonderful
But of course, the wine (a delicious Christine Andrew 2005 Lodi Malbec) and the company were excellent…and you can’t screw that up, for sure!

I agree with Ang's title. I enjoyed my wine and I enjoyed the company! I did enjoy my tilapia and I really loved the asparagus! The service was great. However, it was way too overpriced for what it all was. Though, it is in a fancy-shamcy neighborhood which I don't really fit in there. I think we did pay for the location. I really have no need to go there again.
Welll, I really wanted to like 730 South as well. I have tried the Lobster Bisque every year they've had it at the Westword Menu Affair and swore someday to eat there. Perhaps it is best to let some things remain a dream...
I'll agree with the reviews about the service -- Melissa was cute and she took us in stride. I ordered the shrimp & lobster enchiladas and was disappointed first by the presentation, and although they were ok, they were not the treat I was expecting. To me, anything that mentions lobster will in some way be elegant. These were not elegant. They weren't bad but they weren't great. They were topped with cheddar cheese which seems very cheap and the filling was much more like cheese enchiladas than what I had in mind for shrimp & lobster. I was so disappointed, I don't even remember what I got on the side. I did like the Tilapia that some girls ordered but really, not enough to return and try it again.
Hello Denver Dinnergirls!!! First off, let me tell you that I am a HUGE fan of your blog- I love reading every time you post a new review!
I've got a question for you, I'm going to be turning 21 on May 31st, and want to take my college friends out to dinner on this special occasion! I was planning on Le Central (which looks fantastic, and I shall have to try one day) per your suggestions, but it doesn't exactly fit into our "college life" budget. I'm looking for great food and great ambiance, moderately priced (around 10 to 15 dollars for a main course). Oh, and of course, as my 21st birthday, they must have good drinks (but not so much to make the under-21ers uncomfortable ;) ).
Anyway, I would LOVE your suggestions of where I can go. I've only lived in Denver about a year and a half now, and am always on the lookout for a great new place, and I would appreciate it if you could help me out!
Thanks!!
Joe, I'm so sorry no one got back to you! I hope you had a wonderful 21st birthday! Have you tried Stubens yet? That might fit your needs and wants. Check out our review on it. Thanks for reading our blog! Who knew!
