Benihana's Sake Fest-5/17/07

Benihana's
Carol's pick
Dinnergirls attending:
Ang., Caroline, Carol, Jen, Katie, Marie, Rhonda

Where does a large, rowdy group of girls go to have dinner prepared right in front of them?
How many shrimp tails did Chef Leo (or was it Leon?) toss onto the neighboring table?
How many sake vessels were ordered on Thursday, May 17th by the Denver Dinnergirls?

If you know the answer to the first question, then you must know our dinner in May was held at Benihana's, 3295 S Tamarac in Denver. This place serves up steak, seafood, and sushi right to your table. Our chef entertained us with his skills; our server kept the drinks and sake flowing with a cheerful smile.

If you know the answer to the other two questions, well, you should have had more sake!

The most commonly ordered meal in our group was the Hibachi Tuna--excellently prepared and complimented by a bunch of grilled veggies--yum! But my favorite was the fried rice. Double yum! The steak and chicken were a little disappointing to some in our group--perhaps concern about cooking the chook thoroughly led to it being dry?? I think Ang and Jen ordered a caterpillar roll. That looked crawly and green but tasted great.

Prices were on the high side--$21-27 for a dinner but, man, did a lot of food come at that price.

After feasting, the girls stopped in at JJ something or other on Monaco. Katie & I had a great time playing air hockey. The bar seemed to be frequented by men with a taste for metal music. Not bad but I wouldn't want to hang out there too long. They probably were shocked to see a group of women stop in!

Sock it to me, Saketini!!!

MMMMM....Mango Saketini, it's not just for breakfast anymore!
I could have drank those little @&*!#%$ all night long. Thank god they were too expensive for that!

Dinner was fun and delicious, Ahi Ahi! I have to say that I thought the pricing was a bit off. Jen and I split a dinner and I think we both ended up with more food than Carol, who ordered the same thing!
The Catapillar Roll was divine, but maybe it didn't need avocado on the inside as well as the outside! I did have a bite of Caroline's steak and I thought it was really good, maybe I got the best piece???

And that Leo! Funny guy but maybe not the best shrimp-tail tosser in the place!

All in all, I had a thoroughly enjoyable dinner! Good food and great company as always!

However, I can't say I liked the JJ place we went to afterwards...I mean what kind of bartender serves you a micro-brew with a slice of citrus and doesn't offer you a glass???

Anywhooo...I had a fantastic evening, as usual...babes rule!

Can't wait to see y'all in the park next month!

xoxo

ps. Upon "preview" it may seem that this post is a little negative...I don't mean for it to appear that I didn't enjoy dinner...cause I really did, really! It was yummy and good and I had a hellacious hangover on Friday to prove it!

Whooops! I was experimenting with my post and lost my review upon delete. Do not delete your comments, girls. You cannot get them back. And then it leaves this "Deleted by author" thing. Doh!

So anyway... and again... Benihana!

I've enjoyed Hibachi grilling in other cities but I've never been to a Benihana or anything like it in Denver so I was excited to visit for our last dinner. We were promptly seated at the back of the restaurant (I believe Carol told them we were loud.) I was at the end of the table so I couldn't hear what the other girls were saying for most of dinner. It was pretty loud in Benihana!

The drinks were tasty, if not expensive. I had some sake mojito or something crazy like that and then some more hot sake with my dinner. Then we were served up some sauteed veggies and shrimps, along with our soups and salads.

I split the seared tuna with Ang. -- Hibachi is fun! But we did indeed seem to get a lot more food than Carol - perhaps Leo wasn't paying attention to our order? Who knows. The veggies & shrimp Leo seared tasted quite fresh and the tuna was (under)cooked to perfection.

But our chef! He was fun in a reserved kind of way. His skills could use some sharpening in the shrimp toss area of dinner. I thought that was a little humiliating for the chef to have to perform this silly ritual at every table so I can't blame him for not being concerned about missing a few. But for the price, I suppose we ought to get some kind of show!

I enjoyed my dinner at Benihana but I cannot say there was a lot of flavor or anything really interesting happening as far as the cuisine -- even the dressing on the iceberg lettuce salad was a little bland. Perhaps I'm used to sauces, spices and accompaniments that are so common in restaurants and cooking these days. Either way, and mainly due to expense, I would have to give Benihana a B.

And this JJ's joint - heavy metal heaven is what I remember! Not my sort of spot -- but the company was tops.

As always, anxiously awaiting our next dinner...
